The Handwashing Techniques Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Handwashing Techniques - Assignment Example Using the literature I will look at and explore the factors that may have influenced the learner and their performance in Scenario One (hand washing). I will then, with reference to the literature, identify one of these contributory factors and critically discuss and analyse the mentor's role in addressing the identified factor. I will then identify recommendations for best practice. There are many definitions of assessment in the literature. According to Rowntree (1987) "assessment occurs whenever one person in some kind of interaction, direct or in direct, with another is conscious of obtaining and interpreting information about the knowledge and understanding of the abilities and attitudes of this person". Curzon (1990) defines assessment as the process of: "collection, measuring and interpreting information relating to students' responses to the process of instruction". Ewan and White (1996) define assessment as "the process by which teachers attempt to gauge student' progress and learning". Quinn (2000), states that through assessment in practice judgement is made on the quality of the learners' work, as a way of supporting the learner and of appraising their achievement of their set of outcomes. The common theme of the above mentioned definitions is measurement and progression or competence and outcome Flanagan et al (1999). From the scenario we see that t he student is being assessed formatively. It is important that the mentor is aware of the difference between formative and summative assessments. Price (2005) discusses the two purposes of assessment: Formative assessment in which the mentor is the advisor. The formative assessment is to advise the student of progress towards the goal. Summative assessment is in order to judge the learning. The purpose of the assessment in the given scenario is to observe the maintenance of asepsis. Medical Asepsis is defined as, "the procedures used to reduce the number of microorganisms and prevent their spread." [Mosby 2009]. One of the basic principles of health care that is drilled into the minds of all health care professionals from a very early stage in their training is the importance of maintaining strict asepsis in their handling of patients. The lesson is repeated so often as to become second nature for health care professionals. The reason that maintenance of asepsis is stressed upon so often in medical practice is that significant benefits can accrue from following a few simple rules. The rate of transmission of infection from on patient to another in wards and OPDs can be reduced significantly. Asepsis can also be productive towards decreasing the incidence of illness among health care workers themselves by reducing transmission of pathogenic bacteria from patients to carers. A number of rules are in practice for the maintenance of asepsis. These include specific techniques for handwashing and use of sterilization procedures for the sheets, instruments and apparatus used in relation with patients. In the chosen scenario, the student follows the instructions taught to the letter, but forgets to apply simple sense to the situation and soils her hand without even realizing what she has done. There can be a number of

Organization as a Machine Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Organization as a Machine - Essay Example It also adopts British Telecom as the case study. Overall functioning structure of traditional organization using machine metaphor Evidently, machine metaphor concept has immensely contributed to growth prospects of various institutions due to its noble ideals and synergies. Morgan (2007) asserted that, it has in stilled basic elements and ideals, which organizations should embrace. He further stated that, organizations are all about effective interaction, predictability, reliability and controllability at various points of activity through structured systems, which instills sanity. In particular, machine metaphor concept is a system, which provides a comprehensive view of institutions through detailed interaction of various elements, which facilitates predictability, and control of events (Odubiyi, 2012). Clearly, organizations must adopt predictable and reliable business practices including market positioning to ensure sound performance, which is a critical aspect for most institut ions. Mechanistic view is a noble concept, which considers institutions as holistic entities, which operate under strong combination of manageable components. As indicated by Odubiyi (2012), major components, which requires effective management includes organizational chart, job description, policies, operational plans and people. Critically, machine metaphor concept facilitated growth in various traditional institutions due to its effective management and control ideals, which ensured delivery of services based on quality policies. Consequently, the concept enhanced organizations competitive capacity through development of superior production and business techniques, which were accurately coordinated in similar form as machine operation. Functional structure is also a vital pillar, which influences growth in various in situations. He stated that poor functionality of various organizational components through inferior guidelines have contributed to liquidation of many institutions globally. As such, corporations should adopt viable and well structured operating levels with comprehensive job delegation to enhance quality in choice making. Clearly, machine metaphor provides requisite incentives through its structured network system, which enhances management and control at various levels towards formulation of quality decisions (Morgan & Rotunda, 2006). Business And Marketing Plan For A Italian Restaurant Marketing Essay

Business And Marketing Plan For A Italian Restaurant Marketing Essay The location is very good as the CITYPRIDE multiplex is situated in KOTHRUD which is the fastest developed suburb in Pune.It is located close to the market area with Proximity to a number of colleges, schools and IT business establishments.CITYPRIDE is the only multiplex in the area.It also has a mall which leads to high footfalls on A daily basis. With this concentration of customers.there are no Italian restaurants that offer Pizzas and Pastas in Kothrud and a tremendous need for an upscale family restaurant that offers these items for both the adults and children. The turnkey operation seats 150 customers and is the perfect size for an Italian Restaurant. With the current lease and the fitout time of three months it will be very easy to procure all the required equipments and commence operations at the earliest. The growth in the number of high income families in the KOTHRUD area is also projected.ITALIA would be a perfect neighborhood restaurant in the perfect Neighborhood. Introduction- Company Description-PEEGEE Co,a Pune based company, will operate ITALIA, a single unit, medium-size restaurant serving healthy, contemporary style food. The restaurant will be located at shop No;4,CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX,KOTHRUD,PUNE-411038 Mission Statement-The companys goal is that of a multi-faceted success. Their first responsibility should be to the financial well-being of the restaurant. They must meet this goal while trying to consider; 1) the effect of their products on the health and well being of their customers (and their staff), 2) the impact that their business practices and choices will have on the environment, and 3) the high quality of attitude, fairness, understanding, and generosity between management, staff, customers, and vendors. Awareness of all these factors and the responsible actions that result will give our efforts a sense of purpose and meaning beyond their basic financial goals. Development Status The company was incorporated in December 2010. The founders are Pravin Malhotra and Vikas Malhotra. Both are the managing partners of the co. They have put Rs 10,00,000/- each towards the initial investment for research and start-up costs. The remaining will be funded by the banks. A suitable site for the first restaurant was found last month and lease negotiations are in the final stages. The location will be in CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX,in Kothrud which is biggest and the fastest developing suburb in Pune. When the lease is signed there will be three months of free rent for construction and in that time the balance of the start-up funds must be raised. With that phase completed, ITALIA Restaurant can then open and the operations phase of the project can begin. Future Plans If the business is meeting its projections by month nine, they will start scouting for a second location and develop plans for the next unit. Their five year goal is to have 3 restaurants in the PUNE area with a combined annual profit of between RS 50 LAKHS To Rs 100 Lakhs. The SWOT Analysis Strength-The strength of the company lies in the fact that Mr Pravin Malhotra the managing director of the company is a graduate from the Institute of Hotel Managent, Aurangabad. He is very honest and hardworking and has worked with the Le Meridien group of hotels as a F B manager for the last three years. His experience in the hotel industry would be very helpful in the day to day running of the restaurant. In addition the fact that both the directors are putting in Rs 10 lakhs each from their own savings is also very helpful. The need for additional capital will not be very much and it Could be procured from the banks easily. WeaknessThe fact that the promoters have no previous business experience could be a major drawback for the them. This weakness can be overcome by meticulate planning and Execution. OpportunityThis business plan reflects the opportunity on the part of the promoters to lease the premises offered by the owners of the CITYPRIDE multiplex. They had put up an advertisement in the local newspaper seeking persons interested in running a restaurant at their famous multiplex. The promoters took this opportunity and immediately approached the owners. They were the first ones to do so .They liked the premises instantly since it was located right at the entrance of the multiplex .The promoters immediately took a descision and signed the lease by giving a suitable deposit to the owners of the multiplex.. The promoters saw huge opportunity in opening up an Italian restaurant in the place. This was due to the fact that there was not a single Italian restaurant in the entire suburb of Kothrud which is the largest and the fastest growing suburb of the Pune city.Pune has itself grown into a very large metropolitan city in the past five years with the advent and growth of the IT sect or,In addition Pune has always been an educational hub since the last twenty years boasting of a large number of schools ,colleges and post-graduate management and other institutes. No wonder it is called the OXFORD of the east. Threats-There are a couple of renowned food chains within close range of the CITYPRIDE multiplex. These include the McDonalds restaurant which is located around a Kilo Meter from the place and the SUBWAY which is a mere half KM away from us.These could Provide us with stiff competition and could be a threat to the growth of the restaurant. In additions threat may also be posed by someone who might opt to open another Italian Restaurant in the vicinity. THE PEST ANALYSIS The Political AnalysisThe political environment in the country is very much stable and is conducive to the growth of the industry in general and the hotel industry in particular. The Indian government is taking huge steps to promote local as well as international tourism in the country. The Economical AnalysisThe total investment required for this project is 57,80,000/-. For deposit to the owner of the premises, advance rent of one month, as well as kitchen equipment, for interiors and also starting salary to the staff. The company promoters have pooled in Rs 20,00,000/- from their personal Savings ,The remaining amount of Rs 37,80,000/- will be raised by securing a loan from any of the nationalised banks. The promoters shall mortgage one of their personal property for the same. Social AnalysisAlthough the restaurant industry is very competitive, the lifestyle changes created by modern living continue to fuel its steady growth. More and more people have less time, resources, and ability to cook for themselves. Trends are very important and ITALIA is well positioned for the current interest in lighter, healthier foods at moderate to low prices. The food service business is the third largest industry in the country. The average PUNEITE spends 15% of his/her income on meals away from home. This number has been increasing for the past seven years. In the past five years the restaurant industry has out-performed. The reasons given are 1) lifestyle changes, 2) economic climate, and 3) increase of product variety. There are new restaurants opening every month and more needed to keep pace with increasing demand. The predicated growth trend is very positive both in short and long-term projections. As modern living creates more demands, people will be compelled to eat more meals away from home. Estimates are as high as 30% over the next five years. It is understood that: Consumers will spend a greater proportion of their food Rupee away from home. Independent operators and entrepreneurs will be the main source of new restaurant concepts. Nutritional concerns will be critical at all types of foodservice operations, and food flavors will be important. Environmental concerns will receive increased attention. Technological analysis ITALIA will be 150 seat restaurant. It will cater to the students as well as the business establishments and families of the area.It will require to adopt latest technological equipments to help serve the customers better. The seating arrangement and the chairs and tables must be of high quality and great care must be taken in designing and furnishing the interiors. PRODUCT AND SERVICE PLAN IMPLIMENTATIONS-ITALIA Restaurant will be offering a menu of food and beverages with a distinctive image. There will be three ways to purchase these products; table service at the restaurant, take-out from the restaurant, and delivery to home or office. The Menu The ITALIA menu (see appendices) is moderate sized, and moderate-low priced offering a collection of Italian items with a common theme healthy (low-fat, low cholesterol, natural ingredients), flavorful, and familiar. Their goal is to create the image of light satisfying and still nutritious food. Production Food production and assembly will take place in the kitchen of the restaurant. Fresh vegetables, meat and dairy products will be used to crate most of the dishes from scratch. The chef will exercise strict standards of sanitation, quality production, and presentation or packaging over the kitchen and service staff. Service There will be three ways a customer can purchase food. They may sit down at one of the 150 seats in the dining room and get full service from a steward. A separate take-out counter will service those who wish to pick up their food. Future Opportunities There is a market segment that prefers to eat this type of cooking at home although they do not have the time to cook. There are already caterers and even mail order companies that provide individuals and families with up to a months supply of pre-prepared meals. This opportunity will be researched and developed on a trial basis. If successful, it could become a major new source of income without creating the need for additional staff or production space. The Target Market The market for ITALIA products covers a large area of diverse and densely populated groups. Although it will be located in a downtown urban setting, it is an area where people travel to eat out and one that is also frequented by CINEGOERS. It is also an area known for and catering to the demographic group they are targeting. Market Location Customers -The CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX is the best multiplex in the area.It is one of the most desirable retail locations hosting an independent Mall.In addition it is close to Colleges and universities. The customer base will come from 3 major segments; Local population the city of PUNE with a year-round population of 45 lakhs is centrally located in the Maharashtra state and is within 15 minutes drive of 8 major suburbs. Colleges and Universities PUNE alone has 6 different schools within walking distance of Citypride. In addition 5 more colleges near the square have large student bodies. Tourism à ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬ There are number of tourists coming to Pune all the year long. Local businesses à ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬ Kothrud is a very big suburb of Pune boasting of a huge number of business establishments. The food concept and product image of ITALIA will attract 3 different customer profiles; The student more and more young people have developed healthy eating habits. Some also go through a health food phase while in college. The health conscious person of any age or sex this includes anyone on a restricted or prescribed diet or those who have committed to a healthy diet. Curious and open-minded if you try it, you will like it. Through marketing, publicity, and word-of-mouth, people will seek out a new experience and learn that nutritious food can be tasty, fun, convenient, and inexpensive. Market Trends The Future The population and demographics of PUNE have grown tremendously in the last 15 years.Pune which is called the Oxford of the east is famous for its educational institutes. In addition the economy of Pune has grown leaps and bounds with the Booming of the IT sector. With more and more families becoming nuclear and both the spouses working the people no longer have time to cook at home.Hence the lifestyles of people have changed. The idea of a health consciousness through nutritional awareness and dietary change has been slowly building for the last 5 years. The extensive government studies and new Food Guide Pyramid have given everyone a new definition of a balanced, healthy diet. This is not a fad but a true dietary trend backed by the scientific and medical community, the media, the government, and endorsed by the big food manufacturers. As people want to stay home more and cook less our strategy of delivering prepared meals on a weekly or monthly arrangement may be a widespread accept ed new way of eating The CompetitionThere are over two dozen restaurants in the KOTHRUD area that sell food at similar prices. Although there is no exclusive Italian restaurant this presents an obvious challenge in terms of market share, it also indicates the presence of a large, strong potential. ITALIA will make a successful entry based on an innovative concept or novelty. ITALIA will offer an innovative product in a familiar style at a competitive price. The co must make aggressive plans of take-out and delivery that will also give them an advantage to create a good market share before the competition can adjust or similar concepts appear. Competitors Profile Competing with ITALIA for the target market are these categories of food providers: Independent table service restaurants. Chain restaurants like McDonalds and SUBWAY, Commercial foodservice companies serving students directly. Independent operators include FIVE SEASONS RESTAURANT, MCDONALDS, and The SUBWAY. There are couple of companies which sell food directly to the students as well. Competitive Strategy-There are three major ways in which they must create an advantage over their competitors; product identity, quality, and novelty, high employee motivation and good sales attitude, innovative and aggressive service options. ITALIA will be the only restaurant among all the competition which focuses the entire menu on Italian food. Pizzas and Pastas are a major hit amongst the students as well as the IT public in Pune. Each of the competitors offers only one or two Italian dishes on their menu.ITALIA will be the exclusive Italian restaurant in the entire suburb of Kothrud. Once they have tried the restaurant, their experience will be reinforced by friendly, efficient, knowledgeable service. Return and repeat business will be facilitated by accessible take-out and delivery options. Marketing Plan Sales Strategy Market Penetration Entry into the market should not be a problem. The store has high visibility with heavy foot traffic all day long. The local residents and students always support new restaurants and the tourists do not have fixed preferences. In addition, Rs 1 lakh has been budgeted for a pre-opening advertising and public relations campaign. Marketing Strategy Focusing on the unique aspect of the product theme (healthy, tasty foods) a mix of marketing vehicles must be created to convey their presence, their image, and their message. Print media local newspapers, magazines and student publications, Broadcast media local programming and special interest shows, Hotel guides, concierge relations, Chamber of Commerce brochures, Direct mail subscriber lists, offices for delivery Misc. yellow pages, charity events. A public relations firm has been retained to create special events and solicit print and broadcast coverage, especially at the start-up. The marketing effort will be split into 3 phases; Opening An advanced notice (press packet) sent out by the PR firm to all media and printed announcement ads in key places. Future plans and Strategic Opportunities Catering to offices (even outside of our local area) may become a large part of gross sales. At that point a sales agent would be hired to directly market our products for daily delivery or catered functions. Operations Facilities Offices The restaurant at CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX is a 2400 Square foot space. It was formerly a restaurant and needs on minor structural modifications. The licenses and codes issues are all in order. New equipment and dining room furnishings will be purchased and installed by the general contractor. Offices of the corporation are presently at MR PRAVIN MALHOTRAS home but will be moved to the restaurant after opening. Hours of Operation The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Service will begin at 11:00 AM and end at 11:00 PM. Employee Training Education Employees will be trained not only in their specific operational duties but in the philosophy and applications of our concept. They will receive extensive information from the chef and be kept informed of the latest information on healthy eating. Systems Controls A big emphasis should be placed on extensive research into the quality and integrity of their products. They will constantly be tested for their own high standards of freshness and purity. Food costs and inventory control will be handled by their computer system and checked daily by management. Food Production Most food will be prepared on the premises. The kitchen will be designed for high standards of sanitary efficiency and cleaned daily. Food will be made mostly to order and stored in large coolers in the basement. Delivery Catering Food for delivery may be similar to take-out (prepared to order) or it may be prepared earlier and stocked. Catering will be treated as deliveries. Management Organization-Key Employees Principals-PRAVIN MALHOTRA AND VIKAS MALHOTRAS are the managing partners of the company. They will initially look after the setting up of the restaurant. The restaurant will have a cashier,a FB manager and a team of stewards and waiters to look after the customers. Compensation Incentives ITALIA will offer competitive wages and salaries to all employees with benefit packages available to key personnel only. Management to be Added They must search for a general manager and executive chef. These key employees must be well chosen and given incentives for performance and growth. Management Structure Style Mr Pravin Malhotra will be the Chief Operating Officer. The general manager and chef will report to him. The assistant manager and sous-chef will report to their respective managers, and all other employees will be subordinate to them. Long-Term Development Exit Plan-Goals-ITALIA is an innovative concept that targets a new, growing market. We assume that the market will respond, and grow quickly in the next 5 years. Our goals are to create a reputation of quality, consistency and security (safety of food) that will make us the leader of a new style of dining. Strategies-The marketing efforts must be concentrated on take-out and delivery, the areas of most promising growth. As the market changes, new products may be added to maintain sales.-Milestones-After the restaurant opens, they must keep a close eye on sales and profit. If they are on target at the end of year 1, they will look to expand to a second unit. Risk Evaluation-With any new venture, there is risk involved. The success of the project hinges on the strength and acceptance of a fairly new market. After year 1, we expect some copycat competition in the form of other independent units. Chain competition will be much later. Exit Plan-Ideally, ITALIA will expand to five units in the next 10 years. At that time, we will entertain the possibility of a buy-out by a larger restaurant concern or actively seek to sell to a new owner. CONCLUSION- From the above mentioned analysis and the plans formulated therein we can come to the Conclusion that: Pune is the most favoured destination for IT companies, students and the business community. The economy of Pune has grown with leaps and bounds in the last decade. The popularity of The Italian foods like pasta and pizza have grown with the students and the families. Kothrud is the fastest developing suburb in the Pune city.It does not have an Italian restaurant.Hence there is a tremendous scope for the setting up of an exclusive Italian restaurant which will cater to the student and the IT community. The premises chosen by the company is very good and it attracts a large number of footfalls daily. The footfalls increase dramatically during the weekends. The owner Mr Pravin Malhotra being a hotel management graduate and having a work experience of a fb manager at a reputed hotel is well versed with the job of running a restaurant.Altough he has no business experience ,his work experience may see him through. The owners of the company have a strong financial base and have invested about 20 lakh rupees for setting up the restaurant. In addition they have a personal property that can be mortgaged to the bank for a loan. Although there is a presence of other food chains like the McDonalds and Subway the project may still be a huge success because of the fact that there is not a single restaurant serving a complete Italian menu. With a proper marketing plan and strategy adopted by the company the project is bound to succeed. The owners have also hired quality chefs and managers who in turn will hire quality service staff which will provide healthy and nutritious food to the people.

humans doing their best :: essays research papers

We human beings are a very unique creature. We have the ability to communicate through words, actions, and visions. We also strive to be the best that we can be. Whether at sports, school, or work we all want to be to the leaders of our field. That is why with my guidance and leadership we can grow not only as individual people but as a group of people as well. As you all know, my door is always open to suggestions and comments. If you feel hat something might work better than the way it is being handled let me know. Also, I shall make sure everyone is treated fairly and justly. In our country everyone will be treated equally regardless of their wealth or status, which we all desire. Here, no one will be overworked or underpaid; we will all share the revenue that is created by our fellowman. Lastly, there will be low taxes which will go toward funding our military. Our military will be used to protect citizens so they will not live in fear, it will not be used to police our peop le, like fascists. In the end communism will benefit us by allowing everyone to feel safe and equal. Since we are a communist community I shall be speaking for all of us. But that does not mean you have no say in what goes on. As your leader, I shall keep you all posted on what is happening locally as well as internationally. Unlike democracy, bills will be passed in a timely fashion because there will not be political parties arguing. Also, everyone will have the resources that they need which will eliminate competition for basic necessities, such as food, clothing, housing and education. Furthermore, unlike democratic politicians this government will be honest with its' people. No one under this government would be ruled with an "iron fist," like in fascism, instead the punishments that people receive will be given in accordance with the crimes they commit. First of all lets talk about the rules. Rule number one is no killing. Those who fail to do so will be subject to torture of the victims families' choosing. Second, no stealing. Stealing will result in forced payment of double the value of the item stolen, and in the case that the thief is poor, he or she will do community service equivalent to a dollar a day until they have paid off double what they have stolen.

Rider to the Sea as a Tragedy

Riders to the sea as a Tragedy Drama must excite, startle, thrill and shake us. Such effects cannot be produced by a play which is lacking in conflict. The conflict in a tragic play may be between human beings pulling in different directions, between a character and the environment in which he finds himself or the society of which he is a member. Riders to the Sea succeeds in representing human sufferings which raises pity and fear among us and makes us to decide that the play is a great one in its tragic appeal. The tragic theme of Riders to the Sea moves round with the deep pathos of a mother Maurya. The tragedy of the play is simple and straight- forward, but sublime and universal in its penetrative appeal. The play brings out the utter tragedy of humanity, pitted against the violent force of a cold, unrelenting, natural element- the sea. The sea assumes here almost the role of fate and becomes instrumental to human suffering and death. Riders to the sea is indeed a great tragedy i n its representation of human suffering and cathartic appeal. There are two views on the tragic vision of life. One is that man is the play- thing of inscrutable power called fate and another is that character is responsible for the tragic end.In Greek tragedies, tragic fate for the heroes is predetermined. Oedipus and Antigone become obstinate and tyrannical. Their tragedy is due to their over confidence in their respective attitudes. In this light, we see Riders to the Sea as a suitable combination of Greek and Shakespearean tragedies. The sea is a force of Nature over which nobody has any control. Opposing the sea, and opposed by the sea, are the members of the community living on the island which serves as the setting for this play. The human opponents of the sea in this play are Bartley, his sisters Cathleen and Nora, and his mother Maurya. These human opponents operate on three levels. Bartley must sell his horses at the Galway fair. His sisters seem to have a sacrificial proph etic function. Maurya speaks two great elegies for the dead, and the dead are not only members of her own family, not only members of the island community of Aran, but of the whole world. Man’s conflict with the sea, and woman’s loss, is archetypal; it is everywhere in myth, legend, history, from the Greek Anthology to Lycidas. The people living on the Aran Islands must remain constantly aware of the sea, its menace, its moods, and also its help because it is both the giver and the taker of life.It is the giver of life because the people of the island earn their livelihood partly by catching fish from the sea and collecting wea-weed from the sea-shore; and it is the taker of life because people perish in it. The conflict between the sea and the human characters is indicated at the very outset when we are told about the drowning of a man in the far north and about the shirt and the stocking which were got off that man’s body. If these items of clothing belonged t o Maurya’s son. Michael, then she is to be told that he had got a clean burial. Thus, when the play opens, the sea has already robbed Maurya of one of her sons. The next step is Bartley’s decision to cross over to the mainland in order to sell a couple of horses. Cathleen feels concerned about the weather on the sea, especially when Nora informs her that there is a great roaring in the west, and that it will get worse when the tide has turned to the wind. Maurya feels even more concerned about the weather, and she wants that Bartley should not go this day when the wind is raising the sea and there was a star up against the moon during the night. As Bartley is firm about going, Maurya makes the gloomy forecast that he would be drowned like the rest. When he is actually gone, she wails: â€Å"He’s gone now, and when the black night is falling I’ll have no son left me in the world. † The climax comes when dead body of Bartley is brought to the house and when Cathleen is told by one of the visiting woman that Bartley had been knocked down into the sea by the grey pony and that he had been swept away by a huge wave towards the white rocks. On learning of Bartley’s drowning, Maurya appropriately says: They’re all gone now, and there isn’t anything more the sea can do to me. † There will be no need for Maurya to feel any anxiety about anybody in future because the sea has already taken away from her all her men-folk Thus the sea proves to be a victor in this everlasting struggle between man and the sea. Maurya is, of course, the great loser in the battle, but she is not to be regarded as a single woman who has to bear the brunt of the sea. Maurya represents the whole community living on this island.

Established in 1980, it is Indias second largest political party in terms of representation in the  parliament  and in the various state assemblies. The Bharatiya Janata Party designates its official ideology and central philo sophy to be integral humanism,[1][2]  based upon a 1965 book byDeendayal Upadhyaya. 10][11]  The party is labelled as Hindu nationalist,[12]  and advocates  social conservatism, self-reliance as outlined by theSwadeshi movement,[13]  and a foreign policy centred around key nationalist principles. The  partys platform  is generally considered as the  right-wing  of the Indian political spectrum. [14][15][16][17] The BJP led the national government along with a coalition of parties of the  NDA  from 1998 to 2004, with  Atal Bihari Vajpayee  as  Prime Minister, thus making it the first non-Congress  government to last a full term in office.Since its election defeat in the 2004 general elections, the BJP has been principal amongst the opposition parties in parliament. The party opposed the appeasement policy of the  Indian National Congress[citation needed]  and was against any compromise in the matters of national and cultural integrity, unity and identity. It was widely regarded as the political arm of the  Rashtriya Swayam sevak Sangh. [18] After Mookerjees untimely death in prison in 1953, during an agitation demanding the effective integration of  Jammu and Kashmir  into India, the entire burden of nurturing the orphaned organisation and building it up as a nation-wide movement fell on the young shoulders of  Deendayal Upadhyaya. For 15 years, he remained the outfits general secretary and built it up. He raised a band of dedicated workers imbued with idealism and provided the entire ideological framework of the party. He groomed future political leaders like  Vajpayee,  Advani  and others. However, the vast majority of the party workers, including Upadhyaya himself were derived from the  Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh  (RSS) and brought with them the patriotic fervour and discipline of the parent organisation. [18] The  Jana Sangh  won just three  Lok Sabha  seats in the first general elections in 1952. However, it gradually increased its strength and by 1962 had become one of th e most effective opposition parties in India and seriously challenged the power of the Congress in various north Indian states.Enforcing a  uniform civil code  for all Indians, Barring the killing (and eating) of cows, abolishing the special statues accorded to J;amp;K and majorly promoting usage of the  Hindi language  were some of the pivotal ideological key points of the party[citation needed]. After 1967, The party entered into coalition with  political organisations  of similar ideologies and political positions and formed governments in various states such as  Uttar Pradesh,  Delhi  and others. The party was a major part of the political agitation against the emergency (1975–77) imposed by theIndira Gandhi  regime and thousands of its leaders and workers were reportedly imprisoned across India. The party along with many other political parties merged with the  Janata Party  in 1977 to present a united opposition to the Congress. The Janata Party w on with a huge majority in 1977 and formed the government with  Morarji Desai  as prime minister. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had become the leader of the  Jana Sangh  after Upadhyayas death in 1967, was appointed as the external affairs minister in the new government. The Janata government did not last long, though. Morarji Desai resigned as prime minister, and the Janata party was consequently dissolved. The BJS had devoted all its political efforts to sustain the coalition and was left exhausted by the internecine wars within the Janata Party. Bharatiya Janata Party (1980-)[edit source  |  editbeta] In 1980, the leaders and workers of the former Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded the Bharatiya Janata Party with Vajpayee as its first president. The BJP eavily criticised the Congress government and its policies, and while it opposed the Sikh militancy that was rising in the state of  Punjab, it also blamed Indira Gandhi for biassed and corrupt politics that instigated the mil itancy at national expense. Sikh Leader Darasingh opines that Vajpayee thus brought in Hindu-Sikh harmony. [19] The BJP was a major opponent of  Operation Blue Star. The party was amongst those who strongly disliked and openly protested the violence againstSikhs  in  Delhi  that broke out in 1984, following the assassination of prime minister  Indira Gandhi  by one of her Sikh bodyguards. The BJP was left with only two parliamentary seats in the 1984 elections; the party, however, had established itself in the mainstream of Indian politics, and soon began widening its structure and policies to attract young Indians throughout the nation. During this period, Vajpayee remained central within the party as its president and as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, but increasingly hard-line  Hindu nationalists  began to rise within the party and define its politics. Founders Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first BJP  Prime Minister of India(1998–2004).The BJP bec ame the political voice of the  Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Movement, which was led by activists of the  Vishwa Hindu Parishad  (VHP) and the RSS, and was advocating for the construction of a temple dedicated to  Lord Rama  in place of the  Babri mosque  in  Ayodhya. Many believed, and still do believe, that the site was the birthplace of the Lord, and that there was a temple long before the  Babri mosque  was built after the alleged demolition of the temple by Babar. They held that this qualified the site as one of the most sacred sites of  Hinduism, where a temple should be reconstructed. The party under its president  Lal Krishna Advani  invigorated the nation with various rath yatras and succeeded in creating a popular protest amongst Hindus. On 6 December 1992, hundreds of VHP and BJP activists broke down an orderly protest into a frenzied attack, and razed the mosque. Over the following weeks, waves of violence between Hindus and Muslims erupted all over th e country, killing over 1000 people. The VHP was banned by the government, and many BJP leaders, including L. K. Advani were arrested briefly for provoking the destruction.Although widely condemned by many across the country for playing politics with sensitive issues, the BJP won the support of millions of Hindus, as well as national prominence. Victory in assembly elections of  Delhi  in 1993 and  Gujarat  and  Maharashtra  in March 1995, and a good performance in the elections to the  Karnataka  assembly in December 1994, propelled the BJP to the centrestage. During the BJP session at Mumbai in November 1995, BJP president L. K. Advani declared that Vajpayee would be the Prime Minister of India if the BJP won the next parliamentary elections scheduled for May 1996.In that election, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Lok Sabha and Vajpayee became Prime minister. He, however had to resign within 13 days as the BJP was unable to obtain the required maj ority. In the Lok Sabha elections held in 1998 the  National Democratic Alliance  (NDA) obtained a  simple majority. This time, the BJP (NDA) had allied with the  All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam  (AIADMK) and the  Biju Janata Dal  besides its existing allies, the  Samata Party, the  Shiromani Akali Dal  and  Shiv Sena. Outside support was provided by the  Telugu Desam Party  (TDP).The NDA had a slim majority, and Vajpayee returned as prime minister after the 13-day stint in 1996. [20]But the coalition ruptured in May 1999 when the leader of AIADMK,  Jayalalitha, withdrew her support, and fresh elections were again held. On 13 October 1999, the BJP-led NDA riding on a wave of popularity, following victory in the Kargil war and major public support for Vajpayee, won 303 seats. The BJP alone had its highest ever tally of 183. Vajpayee became prime minister for the third time, and Advani became the deputy prime minister and  Home Minister. This NDA government lasted its full term of five years.Vajpayee and his economic team, led by Finance Minister  Yashwant Sinha  continued the policies initiated by the previous Congress government under  P. V. Narasimha Raoand  Manmohan Singh. The NDA government also facillatated major privatisations of previously nationalised government corporations, the implementation of  World Trade Organisation  guidelines,  airline deregulation, foreign investment  and ownership and allowed private companies such as  Mahindra World City  and  Reliance  to build  Special Economic Zones  where  property developers  could build new cities with high-standard infrastructure to manufacture and export products. The BJP and the NDA met with an unexpected defeat in the  2004 general elections, and failed to muster a parliamentary majority. Manmohan Singh of the  Congress Party  and  United Progressive Alliance  succeeded Vajpayee as prime minister. In May 2008, the BJP wo n the state elections in Karnataka. This was the first time that the party had won Assembly elections in any south Indian state. In the 2009 general elections, BJP again faced defeat and its strength in Lok Sabha reduced to 116 seats. The unexpected defeat of BJP is attributed to bad performance of the party in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh.
